Indonesia ranks top for online shopping via smartphone, says MasterCard.
MasterCard recently released its survey results for year 2012 on online shopping in Asia Pacific that involved 7011 respondents from 14 countries. Not surprisingly, Indonesia tops the chart for online shopping via smartphone. According to the survey, China tops the positions for the highest propensity for online shopping with the index count of 102 followed by New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Thailand.
The survey was conducted during November and December 2012 and within these two months alone, Indonesia saw a high percentage of smartphone users who conducted online shopping via their mobile phones. According to the survey, 54.5 percent from the Indonesia respondents reported that they were familiar with the usage of smartphone and online transaction. This survey also reveals that the least favourable shopping trend includes lifestyle and fashion. Only 18 percent of the respondents reported to show interest in these two sections. This comes off as a surprise because personally, Indonesia is one of the highest fashion product manufacturers and it could be the push for Indonesians to shop more online.
The Indonesians are more familiar with the usage of mobile banking application, widely used by the local consumers as compared to NFC technology that could still be a stranger to them. According to Porush Singh, Senior Vice President MasterCard for Core Products, Global Products & Solutions, Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa mentioned that this MasterCard survey reflects a lot on behaviour change in terms of online shopping according to countries. Many have opted to shop online and the usage of smartphones as the shopping platform has also increased. He personally hopes that this trend continues because there would be more advancement in technology and in future, there will be more things offered online.
