Google and Media Development Authority Singapore to promote cyber-wellness amongst youths

Now you know cyber wellness competition 2012Google and Media Development Authority (MDA) declared a local competition known as Now You Know to promote cyber-wellness and good online practices among Singaporean youths. Winning entry will enjoy a four-days, three-nights trip to Mountain View, California.

This exciting competitions calls for Singaporean students aged 13-19 to create and personalize a video up to five minutes in length of any format and style. Permitted to work individually or in teams of up to four, students are required to produce videos on cyber-wellness issues and good online practices.

The winning entry will win a four-day, three-night trip as well as an accompanying teacher to Mountain View, California. That’s not all. The first runner-up will get to walk away with Android phones while submissions that garners most votes online will be given a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the Google office in Singapore. Free Google Apps training will even be conducted in schools of winning teams.

Ms Deborah Nga, Youth Literacy Lead for APAC at Google said, “Google is committed to helping youth develop digital literacy skills that will help them navigate the Internet. We hope that this contest will encourage youth to start thinking about issues such as how to discern online information and keep their data secure. Ultimately we believe they will become ‘netvocates’ for good online practices”.

“The Internet is not only a great source of information but also an engine of economic growth. Learning about cyber-wellness and media literacy will help Singaporeans youths to leverage the platform in their future successes, while protecting themselves online,” said Ms Lai Lei Khim, Deputy Director of Outreach from MDA.

Submissions start from 6 August 2012 and close on 30 September 2012. Voting for the Crowd Favourite category opens 1-14 October 2012 and one lucky voter will also get to walk away with Google merchandise worth S$100. All winners will be announced at a ceremony in Google office in Singapore on 16 October 20120.

Singaporean students aged 13-19 are invited to submit a video up to five minutes in length of any format and style to http://sites.google.com/site/nowyouknowchallenge. Working individually or in teams of up to four, the students are asked to create videos to educate their peers on cyber-wellness issues and good online practices. The second place winners will walk away with Android phones, whilst the submission that garners the most public votes online will win its creators a chance to visit in the Google office in Singapore for an afternoon. All winning teams will also get free Google Apps training for their schools.
