NTT DOCOMO confirms joint venture with China’s search giant Baidu with 20% investment in Baidu Yi Xin

According to The Next Web, Japanese mobile operator DoCoMo has just completed a $22.5 million investment for a 20 percent share in Baidu Yi Xin, a joint venture with Chinese search firm Baidu which will provide value-added services and digital content for mobile devices in the country.

The official press statement reads: “Starting in August, Baidu Yi Xin plans to provide content from Japan on its platform. For the first batch, the company will collaborate with DeNA Co., a major Japanese provider of social games, e-commerce and other Web services, and its Chinese subsidiary to distribute Japan-made content localized for the Chinese market.”

Recently, DoCoMo also invested in Cooliris, the company behind AdJitsu as well as Cooliris. Looks like mobile operators around the region are actively looking into investment opportunities, especially cross border investments. Local mobile operator SingTel, through its venture arm SingTel Innov8, is also aggressively investing. In June alone, it invested in Cayman-based General Mobile as well as Boston-based mobile ad exchange Nexage, two multi-million dollar investments.
