Telenor Group and Opera Software today announced that they will be recommitting their partnership and expanding it to include the mobile web for their customers. This new agreement will include Opera’s email, application store, payment solution and advertising opportunities.
The Norwegian mobile operator, with operations in 11 markets, selected Opera as a Telenor partner two years back. Opera Mini has been said to be a “particular success” for DiGi, Telenor’s Malaysian operator, and Grameenphone in Bangladesh. As for Grameenphone, the campaigns saw 1.3 million new users of the co-branded Opera Mini in a year. DiGi, on the other hand, was a lot more swift – it gained nearly half a million new users in just four months.
DiGi and DTAC in Thailand also launched campaigns to enable users to surf with the Telenor co-branded version of Opera Mini for content from Wikipedia and Facebook at no data charge.
“We have already seen rapid uptake of a co-branded version of the Opera Mini mobile browser in our business units, helping our many basic-phone customers experience the internet, sometimes for the first time. We believe this re-forged partnership will open up even more opportunities for our business units and our customers to take advantage of the full benefits of the web,” said Rolv-Erik Spilling, head of Telenor Digital Services.
