From 2003 to 2008, Thailand’s online gamine industry grew between 15 to 25 percent year-on-year with Asiasoft reporting a market growth of 23 percent year-on-year from 2009 to 2010. The market increased from US$68.3 million in 2009 to US$82.4 million in 2010 and is expected to reach US$132 million by 2014.
Much of the growth of online gaming in Thailand can be attributed to the growth of broadband Internet, the variety of games available and the decrease in hardware prices.
In 2011, Asiasoft and True occupied over 50 percent of the market share in Thailand. MMORPG games are the most popular type of online games played in the country, capturing over half of the market share, followed by FPS games with 26 percent share.
According to Pipal Research, The growth of online gaming has affected the gaming value chain significantly by removing distributors and retailers. Leading game publishers themselves are now engaged in the distribution of their games, sometimes working with Internet service providers as aggregators and distributors for these games. For casual or social games, game portals such as Sanook and Kapook act as the substitute for distributors and retailers, linking consumers directly to publishers.
According to Paula Komalarajun, President of the Game & Interactive Digital Entertainment Association, “Thailand has a large number of ‘indy’ and freelance game developers who have developed games on many platforms, such as online, Facebook, iPhone and other mobile phone applications. But while Thai developers are very creative, they need to develop content management and planning skills.”
