These are exciting times for the IT industry, says new Microsoft Thailand head

By

Newly-appointed Microsoft Thailand managing director Mr. Haresh Khoobchandani says the company will focus on the market’s evolving needs.

A Microsoft veteran with over 15 years of experience in different roles, Mr. Haresh joins Microsoft Thailand after having served as Chief Operating Officer for the company in Indonesia, where he helped the subsidiary achieve over 30% growth. He has served the company under various roles, including Chief Marketing Officer for the Asia Pacific Consumer & Online business, as well as Senior Director roles across both the Marketing, Operations and the Small & Medium Business and Partner organizations in Singapore, Malaysian subsidiaries as well as in Asia Pacific.

“There is more to come with our strong innovation pipeline for businesses, consumers, developers and our partner ecosystem. These are exciting times for the IT industry and I look forward to making a difference to our people, our customers and our partners as we continue to focus on their constantly evolving needs today and in the near future.”

Thailand is really interesting because it is a growing market for technology startups. With a population of around 70 million — the fourth largest in Southeast Asia — Thailand holds many opportunities for local and foreign technology startups. We recently wrote that even though more than two thirds of Thai consumers above the age of 15 own an Internet-capable mobile phone, the frequency used to access the internet stands at a surprisingly low 7%. Access from desktop computers is at 38%, while laptops are at 35%, indicating that these are the primary devices used in this market.

However, the survey also took into account changing consumer trends. Around 41% of Thai users indicated that they wished to purchase a tablet computer this year, compared to 29% for laptops and 22% for smartphones. The wide demand by Thai consumers for tablets have since seen a 300% growth of the Thai tablet market.

With the huge demand for tablet and a huge population, Thailand should definitely be one of the key focus for Microsoft, particularly with its Windows 8 platform and Surface tablet. Mr. Haresh plays a huge responsibility in tapping the huge opportunities in Thailand on behalf of the company.
