Venture Republic Inc., an e-commerce group headed by CEO Kei Shibata, today announced that two of their websites, Hotel.jp and Travel.jp, have seen significant growth in terms of visits on mobile devices. While the total number of visits to the two websites exceeded eight million on both personal computers and mobile devices in August 2013, user access via smartphones is 3.3 times more than what was reported last year.
Travel.jp is a travel meta search engine which allows users to search and compare tour packages and airfares from both online and offline travel agents throughout Japan. In addition, it also provides a comprehensive domestic travel guide known as “Tabinesu” and a tool for searching vacancies on domestic flights in real-time, or better known as “Soratan”.
Hotel.jp, on the other hand, is a user-generated online hotel review service that works as a platform for users to post pictures, videos and comments about the hotels they stayed in. Users can also find deals and offers from travel agencies and accommodation suppliers.
Kei shared that their “investment over the last 12 months has really paid off.” He then added, “It is clearly only a matter of time before our traffic from smartphones will exceed that from desktop PCs. We continue to maintain our strong focus on mobile and are committed to driving innovations that will allow our users to find the best travel ideas and products quickly and conveniently.”
There’s no doubt about it that Japan is primed to be the next smartphone paradise in Asia, perhaps after China. According to Informa WCIS (Q3, 2013) cited in Mobi Thinking’s Global Mobile Statistics report in May 2013, USA, China and Japan are the top countries for number of 3G (mobile broadband subscribers).
Venture Republic also supports this thinking. In its press release, the company states,
“The popularity of smartphones has exploded in the past few years, and our traffic from smartphones grew to 3.3 times larger than the previous year. Traffic on mobile now accounts for more than 40 percent of total visits to the websites.”
Travel.jp and Hotel.jp both offer smartphone-specific displays and applications, so that users can efficiently make targeted travel searches on their mobile devices. The sites will continue to provide quality services like these in order to attract even more users.
