What will the Minecraft company do after the next 10 years?

If publisher Mojang does not earn a profit with a new hit game, co-founder Markus ‘Notch’ Persson will disband the company

The Minecraft series has always been publisher Mojang’s meal ticket since it first came out years ago. Its co-founder, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, has figured that the company needs to do something new within the next 10 years.

According to a recent Rolling Stone interview, Notch said that while Minecraft will keep making money for the company, it will be fine even if it didn’t. “We just have 10 fun years, and then, the last year, we’d say to our employees: ‘If we don’t make any money this year, Mojang is going to be dead. So you might want to look for new jobs.’”

Will this be enough for the company to pull out its postponed 0x10c project? It’s hard to say. Mojang’s other strategy collectible card game, Scrolls, is making ‘peanuts’ when compared to Minecraft. However, the company has a new initiative – a monthly subscription service called Minecraft Realms where it creates an ecosystem that makes Minecraft players play together in big groups easily.

It may be the only notable game in its stable, but Mojang’s Minecraft has done more than well for itself. Minecraft: Pocket Edition has sold over 21 million copies within a span of almost three years since its October 2011 debut. The portable edition will include larger worlds for players to use in the future. The overall franchise doubled in profits in 2013 and earned US$130 million.
