Singapore’s latest online marketplace for household goods RedMart, just announced that they are joined by Todd Kurie, the former Director of Marketing at eBay and most recently VP Marketing at MyCube. Todd will head RedMart as VP of Marketing.
RedMart recently exhibited at our Echelon 2012 event and we did an interview with them to find out more about their online grocery shopping model. Since then, RedMart has averaged over 50% growth month on month despite very little marketing. Roger Egan, cofounder and CEO of RedMart told us that this growth was mostly derived through word of mouth from satisfied customers. “We were waiting to do a significant marketing push until we increased our product selection. Now we have over 4,000 products and our selection is growing at a few hundred products a month. Our goal is to have the largest selection of household essentials in Singapore.”
Todd to lead aggressive marketing push
With Todd onboard, he will bring his extensive experience from eBay, one of the world largest e commerce platform today, as well as his experience at MyCube onboard. There will definitely be a huge marketing push from RedMart in the upcoming few months, be it digital marketing push or even offline marketing campaign. Roger also shared that they will be focusing on maintaining an excellent service. “In this business, there is a delicate balance between marketing and our capacity to fill orders. We’ve now built up some capacity and are ready for a bigger marketing push. Todd is the perfect person to lead this push in the most efficient way.”
Upcoming Talent War
One thing that struck me is that, as Todd shuffles around his various role from eBay to MyCube and now RedMart, is this a sign of an impending talent war among the startup community in Singapore? Has it already begun? Back in May, we saw Google Southeast Asia’s senior conversion specialist, Vinoaj Vijeyakumaar joined Dropmyemail as the Head of Product Development, and two months back, Viki hired Danny Tan as the Director of Product. What this means is that, startups and corporations increasingly have to pay more attention to the growth and job satisfaction for its employees, because once the intense talent war starts to mirror the situation in the Silicon Valley, it could be hard to hunt and retain quality talents, and it could even get ugly.
It could be, that an impending storm is coming.
