Last Saturday, startups, investors and the members of the local business community convened at Chiang Mai’s Airport Business Park, as e27 held the next Satellite event of Echelon Thailand.
Even as the Chiang Mai Satellite event didn’t feature as many startups as the Bangkok Satellite, the atmosphere was no less exciting as various speakers took to the stage to share their business knowledge and experience.
First up was Abhinav Kumar from HotelQuickly, who talked about how company culture can affect a startup’s team. Next was Tiwa York of Olx.co.th, who shared tips on how to grow startups internationally. Fliplingo Founder Matt Aussaguel ended the keynote session by speaking on design hacking for startups.
Then came the pitching session. Judging the startups were Amarit Charoenphan, veteran of the Thai startup scene and Co-founder/Co-CEO of HUBBA; Pradorn Sureephong, Director at Chiang Mai University; Tiwa York, Head Coach at Olx.co.th; and last but not least, e27’s very own Co-founder, Thaddeus Koh.
Piggipo the unanimous winner
Continuing the tradition of startups winning both the Satellite and the People’s Choice awards, credit card app Piggipo took the two awards at the Chiang Mai Satellite. Developed by Neversitup, the Piggipo app helps users manage their credit card usage by tracking spending and warning them when they are approaching their credit limit.
Started four months ago, Piggipo has gotten about 45,000 downloads, and is one of the top five finalists in the DTAC Accelerate v2.0 startup programme. Founder and CEO Supichaya Surapunthu shared that his team came up with Piggipo as they saw that many Thais with more than one credit card faced problems such as not knowing how much credit they have left for each card, too many payment slips to keep track of, and forgetting to pay the bill, thus incurring high interest rates.
With tech industry players and investors such as Amit Anand of Jungle Ventures and Kuanhua Hsu of GREE Ventures, the finale Echelon Thailand event to be held on September 18 and 19, 2014 will certainly provide an opportunity for startups like Piggipo to find partners and funding.
