For July Founders Drinks in Manila, we are proud to have RJ David, co-founder and managing director of Sulit.com.ph, who will talk about strategic partnerships and acquisitions. e27, Smart DevNet and IdeaSpace are co-presenting, as DevNet is also celebrating their first anniversary.
Sulit.com.ph is among the most prominent sites from the Philippines, and is actually the top local site in terms of traffic and authority, according to Alexa. Apart from being a successful tech entrepreneur, RJ is also an active participant in the Philippine startup ecosystem, often acting as mentor and partner to local startup founders and would-be founders.
Sulit has 2.03 million registered users as of 2nd quarter this year and 13.7 million monthly unique visitors. Of Sulit’s 289 million monthly pageviews, about 58 million come from mobile devices. While Sulit is at the top of its game in the local e-commerce scene, it has had its eye out for competition and potential partnerships. Just recently, Sulit announced its acquisition of Pinoy Auto Trader, a recently-launched startup that aims to become the top online resource for the secondary auto market in the Philippines. Pinoy Auto Trader has partnered with auto dealerships and also offers its services to individuals who are selling their vehicles.
As Sulit also runs its own Sulit Cars, competition was inevitable, although both companies’ founders found a way to better address the market: partnership through acquisition. And so, Sulit acquired the Pinoy Auto Trader platform, which enables users to “be in two places at once.” They can manage their Pinoy Auto Trader listings and Sulit listings right from one dashboard. It’s not always David vs. Goliath, especially if both can help each other out with their strengths and abilities.
Here at e27, we have covered the startup scene in Southeast Asia, and we have observed instances of both competition and collaboration. While competition breeds innovation and keeps a startup founder on his or her toes, collaboration also brings about certain synergies and benefits, especially if your business can better reach its target audience.
Founders Drinks in Manila this July will be held at the Craft Pub & Grill at the Fort Strip, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM (and beyond!). e27, Smart DevNet and IdeaSpace have partnered to bring Founders Drinks to you, where we can hear about the benefits of partnerships and synergy from RJ. This also marks the first anniversary of Smart DevNet, which means Founders Drinks this July will be double the usual celebration.
