In this weekly feature, we take a look at the recent Japan games sales and share our own two cents on the current market.

Were Sony PS4’s high sales in Japan a momentary surge until Nintendo’s 3DS system would slowly take back the top spot? Hardly, as Sony’s next-gen console sales were still going strong.

According to the recent Media Creates sales chart update for the week of February 24, the PS4 was at first place in the console sales list with with 65,685 unit sold. Nintendo’s money-in-the-bank portable was at 38,013 units. The PS Vita was at 23,124, while the PS3 was at 13,155 units.  it’s safe to say that not much could occupy the top two console spots for now regardless of game sales for a particular platform.

On the software side of things, it seems that many Japanese gamers were highly anticipating the next installment in the Harvest Moon series. Harvest Moon: Linking The New World sold 130,782 units on its debut week of February 24. This was followed by a new 3DS title that made its debut with 58,329 units sold: an RPG called Fossil Fighters: Infinite Gear. Imagine a Pokémon-like RPG, but with dinosaurs.

Meanwhile, Square Enix RPG Dragon Quest Monsters 2 was at 53,276 units and won’t budge from the top ten. As a reminder, a new Dragon Quest game launch was considered a sacred day for gamers in the country due to its legacy.  Indeed, if you were to look at the list for the week (and a few more in the next week or two), 3DS games would be a dime a dozen in presence.

Was that enough to oust all PS4 titles out of the top ten? Not likely, as Knack was at second place with 66,772 units while the PS4 version of Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin! was at eighth place 22,466. However, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to guess that non-exclusive PS4 titles would eventually fade away from the top ten. Such was the case of the PS3 version of Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin! which sold 54,148 units. Japan wasn’t going to jump into the next-gen water so soon anyway.
