GOPAY announced that it has made available as a payment option in Google Play Store, joining other payment options such as phone credit, voucher purchase for balance top-up, and credit card on the app store, as reported by DailySocial.

The availability of GOPAY is a part of the results of Google’s investment to gojek earlier this year.

Timothius Martin, SVP Digital Product of GOPAY explained that the collaboration between GOPAY and Google Play is the first of its kind, involving e-money in Indonesia.

Credit card dominated the payment method in Google Play, while Indonesia’s score on credit card penetration remains low.

“We’d love to give easier access to the underserved market with no access to credit card to be able to enjoy and purchase many applications and entertainment in Google Play,” said Martin.

Indonesia accounts for 150 million internet users, 90 per cent of which use smartphone and 91 per cent of that number uses Android. According to data shared by Martin, Indonesians spent US$313.6 million to purchase mobile application last year, with Google Play’s download rate increases by 15.4 per cent earlier this year.

Social media is the most popular app downloads on Google Play, followed by in-app purchase for online game, increases by 16.8 per cent.

With GOPAY as a payment option on Google Play, in-app purchase is more readily available.
It is also a testament of gojek’s support towards local publishers of apps and games as the country has seen a spike in e-sports and gaming industry this past year.

gojek recently launched a new logo called Solv as a symbolic rebranding, commemorating a 1,100 per cent growth in transactions over the past three years, as well as a hallmark for its next phase of growth.
