In an attempt to revamp its efforts to develop smartphones challenging Android and iOS operating systems, Mozilla has teamed up with a number of global partners.
Mozilla has joined hands with Deutsche Telekom, Spain’s Telefonica, South Korea’s LG, US-based Qualcomm, and Chinese manufacturers ZTE and TCL/Alcatel in creating an Open Web Device Compliance Review Board.
“Users want a wide selection of devices and great apps. This is the next step in building the ecosystem and will make it easier for partners to get a wide selection of high-quality solutions into consumers’ hands quickly and efficiently,” said Andreas Gal, Vice President of Mobile, Mozilla.
As opposed to the closed operating systems now used in smartphones, the new entity by Mozilla will set technical standards for an open mobile operating system.
Qualcomm Technologies vice president Jason Bremner, said the technical body will set a clear path for any organization to commercialize open Web devices.
The first smartphones using Mozilla were launched in mid 2013, made by China’s ZTE and the small Spanish-based manufacturer GeeksPhone. The California-based nonprofit foundation’s Keon and Peak models of smartphones were made available in the market.
Mozilla, which has been ruling the web browser segment with Firefox has been subjected to tough competition and resistance in terms of challenging the dominance of existing smartphone platforms. However, Gal explained that having uniform technical standards, would help get new products to the market.
Sales of the ZTE Firefox phone began this year in the US and Britain. The Mozilla Foundation claims to have at least 17 operators on board and plans to launch phones in Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland and Serbia.
