Philippine-based telecom conglomerate PLDT today announced that its subsidiary PGC has launched an on-demand Filipino TV service for overseas Filipinos, Smart Pinoy TV, with strategic partner Israel-based LATTO on board.
Alejandro O Caeg, President and CEO, PGC said, “The core proposition of Smart Pinoy TV is to keep our offshore Filipinos entertained and well informed with Philippine current events wherever they are in the world.” He added that the strategic partnership with Israel-based LATTO allows them to create a solution that can be easily modified for future expansions.
Alon Lavi, CTO and Co-founder, Latto said, “Our platform was designed to scale and is capable of simultaneously handling millions of subscribers.”
Around the world, Filipinos are already tuned in to a popular cable TV service The Filipino Channel, which supports the country’s ABS-CBN (Channel 2). However, while TFC does support online viewership, its availability is mainly targeted at standard television sets. According to Smart Pinoy TV’s website, there are four TV channels broadcasted, DZRH, GMA NEWS TV, Kapatid TV5 and AKSYON TV.

PLDT provides telecommunication products and services in the Philippines. As of December 31, 2009, PLDT served 41 million subscribers.
