The Thailand government and Chinese internet giant Alibaba today signed a Letter of Intent that will see the two parties cooperate on a range of initiatives to develop the country’s e-commerce.
Witnessed by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and Alibaba Group’s Executive Chairman Jack Ma, the agreement was signed by Thailand’s Permanent Secretary Wiboonlasana Ruamraksathe and Alibaba Group President Michael Evans at Alibaba’s headquarter in Hangzhou.
“The signing of the agreement between the Ministry of Commerce and Alibaba is in line with the government’s policy to drive Thailand forward under the Thailand 4.0 and Digital Economy strategies, and marks a new chapter in our public-private partnership with world-class organizations and leading e-commerce platforms, as well as academic institutions in the future,” said Jatusripitak in a press statement.

There will be four key areas that the partnership will include:
1. E-commerce training to 30,000 Thai SMEs provided by Lazada Group, which Alibaba owned a majority stake in. The company will also share their experience and expertise with the government to help build Thailand’s own National E-Commerce Platform.
2. The creation of a nationwide People and Talent Development Programme, which aims to train around 10,000 individuals in digital technology proficiency.
3. Alibaba and Lazada to share their experience and expertise in supply chain and logistics systems with Thailand Post.
4. Exploration of cooperation opportunities under the Eastern Economic Corridor Development project, with the goal to help Thailand establish itself as “a hub of digital technology and regional data centers in Southeast Asia.”
The Thailand government has been making efforts to support the country’s growing digital industry by channeling funds and building an ecosystem for technopreneurs to strive in, despite this year’s ban on motorbike-based ride hailing services.
Apart from Thailand, Indonesia has also been reaching out to Jack Ma to help advise its e-commerce roadmap.
