Across regions such as the U.S and Western Europe, hackathon fever has been taking over. It now comes to Asia, and heats up Indonesia.
After last year’s BBM Apps by Research In Motion (RIM), Telkomsel Startup Bootcamp, Global Dartby Dart Team and GTUG Surabaya were sponsored by Google, and NASA and US Embassy’s International Space Apps Challenge in May to give us Hackonten.
The joint event hosted by the local leading magazineGramedia and Finnish mobile tech company Nokia invite top talents to develop mobile apps run over Nokia devices, Lumia and Asha, with the support from high quality contents from the Gramedia holding company Kompas Gramedia group. Some of the participating contents are Intisari, Dunia Soccer, Hai, Chic, Tabloid Nova and Kawanku.
In January, the S40 mobile device with its 1 GHz processor, 2.6 inch LCD, 32GB internal storage and pre-installed mega hit Angry Birds Lite Asha 303 targeting middle to lower market segment was available for Indonesians for the price of IDR 1 million (US$109).
One or two months afterward, the Lumia 710 and 800 was also expected to be released. The marketplace opened for Indonesians to download and buy the apps in the store. The submitted applications have to comply with local laws and regulations. And in this year’s Nokia Developer Day, 800 coders were on hand for hitting 800 news apps.
As the new boss, Martin Chirotarrab said in February upon his appointment “One of the keys is to let consumers know what the Lumia phone is. We are going to put forward ways for people to experience the phone.” Undoubtedly, it’s now the developers’ time.
What the developers need to do first is form a team with maximum of 3 members. Then, submit the ideas with their preferred media and platform as well as required documents and the mock-up from June 11 to June 20. 100 selected participants will be qualified to join the 24 hours coding event starting on June 28.
10 of the best teams will have to pitch their apps in five minutes in front of other attendees. Three winners competing for the prize of IDR 5 million (US$544) to IDR 20 million (US$ 2174) will be announced by the respective judges on 29th of June.
