MebelKart, an online furniture and home décor marketplace in India, has acquired 53central, an online platform that provides group buying options for sports enthusiasts.

The details of the transaction remain undisclosed.

With this acquisition, MebelKart is foraying into bulk selling business.

“Group buying is expected to become phenomenally large in case of the furniture and interior design industries. This acquisition will enable us to further strengthen our position in these sectors,” said Rahul Agrawal, Co-founder and CEO of Mebelkart, in a statement.

As part of the deal, 53central Founder Josy Mathew will join MebelKart as head of business development. He will also lead its new business line of bulk selling.

Founded in 2012 by Agarwal, Nikhil Saraf and Ranjeet Vimal, MebelKart is a furniture e-tailer.

Currently, it has 90,000 products and 500 sellers listed on its platform.

Last month, the firm raised US$20 million from, a Getit Infomedia company, to expand its service offerings and for international expansion.

Started early this year, 53Central provides sports enthusiasts a place to connect with one another, discuss their favourite products and activities, and buy those products together.

It is a crowd bargaining platform and also a provider of professional and financial support facilities for sports enthusiasts worldwide.
