E-commerce is one of the biggest markets in Bangladesh. According to e-cab, there are more than 7,000 e-commerce websites that sell their products on their website or Facebook page.

The current population of Bangladesh is about 165 million, and it is 2.19 per cent of the total population of the world. Also, Bangladesh is eigth in the list of highest-population counties. Around 14.5 per cent of the population uses the internet. According to Prothom-Alo, about 2 million users shop online every year and growth rate is 20 per cent. Dhaka reportedly ranks among most active Facebook users, and the social network’s penetration rate is at 12.7 per cent. According to the report, 22 million users in Dhaka are on social media. This means Bangladesh is a good market for any type of business wanting to sell online.
There are a number of e-commerce and online shopping companies in Bangladesh, including Daraz, AjkerDeal, Bagdoom, Bikroy.com, Ekhanei and amikinee.com. Many companies have been developed to provide support services to e-commerce companies, such as e-Courier, Pathao, and GoFetch. Recently Amazon and Alibaba were reportedly planning to create their network in Bangladesh.
Daraz Bangladesh is Rocket Internet’s sister company. They are now the number one online shopping company in Bangladesh. Recently, Kaymu Bangladesh merged their operation with Daraz. According to Alexa, Daraz Bangladesh is the most visited e-commerce site in Bangladesh ever; Their rank in Bangladesh is 28. As the leading online shopping site in Bangladesh, it has a good portfolio of over 250 brands and counting. Daraz Bangladesh promises to deliver original, authentic, and brand new products right at customer doorstep.And this Bangladeshi online shopping site platform is emerging fast.
Bagdoom Bangladesh started its journey along with Syeda Kamrun Ahmed (CEO) & Mr. Shameem Ahsan (Former President of Basis) when they were still Akhoni. In 2015, they rebranded it to Bagdoom. When they started, most people in Bangladesh didn’t know about how e-commerce companies worked. It as quite challenging in making users realise how easy online shopping would be. Cash on delivery provides transparency in payments, making online shopping in Bangladesh very easy and smooth.
BDJOBS is one of most successful online companies in the history of Bangladesh, an AjkerDeal is their sister company. It is one of the first B2C marketplaces in the country. It has received investment from Silicon Valley venture fund by Innotech Corporation. Most interesting part is that 70 per cent of itsorders come from outside of Dhaka, where people don’t have any access to shops. The company has 2,000 plus merchants and handles over 1,000 orders per day. AjkerDeal makes it clear that it wants to become the market leader.
Pickaboo is an electronics e-commerce marketplace that aims to build a good brand and loyal customer base. It is focused only on electronics products. It started operations in April 2016, and within a short time Pickaboo has managed to get a good position for itself. Now Pickaboo handles 200 plus orders in a day since they only sell electronics product with a good basket value.
International e-commerce companies will enter into the market of Bangladesh; it’s a matter of time now. In the near future, Bangladesh is likely to be a good market for online businesses, especially e-commerce marketplaces.
