Founded by Quek Siu Rui, Marcus Tan and Lucas Ngoo, Carousell is a mobile commerce app that makes buying and selling things through your mobile phone simple. The mobile app was launched back in August last year.
Following its easy to use platform and high user adoption, Carousell is now partnering with STClassifieds to provide their users with a larger base of prospective buyers. The cross platform partnership will see listings posted on Carousell being posted to STClassifieds too. When we spoke to co-founder Siu Rui, he shared that STClassifieds saw the value in Carousell’s convenience in listing and their appeal to youths.
How the partnership talk began
“We spoke to the STClassifieds team about three months ago but much of the work for this collaboration took place in the past month. Getting into this partnership was really serendipitous. We were introduced to the STClassifieds team by someone who met us at a Crafts Fair where we were promoting Carousell.” – Siu Rui
What about the information that is shared with STClassifieds?
Carousell users who are concerned about privacy issues and what kind of information that is shared with STClassifieds can put their mind at rest. The only information that is shared is the username and email address. However, email addresses will not be revealed to the public. Buyers who see the listings on STClassifieds will have to fill up an enquiry form on the STClassifieds advertorial and it will be up to the seller to respond. Carousell users who post their listings through the app also have the option to post to STClassifieds or not to.
It is definitely encouraging and a good sign to see big companies and corporate actively partnering with startups, leveraging them to acquire new users who are increasingly technology savvy.
The trio behind Carousell was part of the NUS Overseas College programme and spent a year in Silicon Valley, and is currently incubated under the NUS Enterprise. They were also the winning team of Startup Weekend Singapore March 2012.
