Opera recently announced that MediaTek Inc. has integrated the Opera TV Store into its Smart TV solution. MediaTek, a fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, has its chipsets included by manufacturers on smartphones, tablets and other connected devices. Now devices that use MediaTek chipsets can provide web functionality and application environments for their TVs, set-top boxes and media players.
According to NPD DisplaySearch forecasts, shipment of Smart TVs with open internet access will grow to 95 million in 2016, and these smart TVs will support open standards such as HbbTV and HTML5. The HTML5-based Opera TV Store offers user-friendly navigation of web apps.
Fret not about missing that moment while watching your favourite show, as side-by-side applications allow viewers to use TV apps without having to navigate away from the show. Not only that, the Opera TV store has been improved with the ability to display ads, which enables publishers and content providers to provide pre-roll ads and to monetize their applications. This also opens up the opportunity for users to get free apps and content.
Want this on your TV? It is now available on Sony Bravia TVs and Blu-ray DVD players. Considering the widespread of this technology, it will soon shipped by other leading TV and set-top-box manufacturers such as TCL and Humax. According to Lars Boilesen, Opera Software CEO, apps and contents on Smart TVs will help to move these devices from being a novelty to the mainstream.
There are more than 100 high quality, HTML5-powered TV apps available such as Associate Press News, Facebook, AUPEO!, Tunein Radio, Redux TV, Twitter, Viewster, Vimeo and more. The number of apps is also growing, and developers can easily redesign existing HTML5 applications running on computers and phones to work on TVs.
