According to serial entrepreneur Michael Wolfe, it is possible to create a good startup with a good idea, but great startups are often the result of ideas that would have seemed ridiculous if you had heard them prior to seeing them working.
Every successful startup has a story to tell you — of being rejected or ridiculed at, in the initial years of building the product. Evan Spiegel, too, got his fair share of rejections from ‘fault-finders’ when he was working on the idea of an ephemeral messaging app.
The story goes like this: Spiegel stood up in a Stanford product design class to present an idea for his final project. He explained that it would be a mobile app, where friends could share photos that would disappear forever in a matter of seconds. Everyone in the hall said that it is a terrible idea, and nobody is gonna use it. If at all someone uses it, it would be for sexting, they said. Worse, a venture capitalist sitting in on the class said it could be interesting if he made the photos permanent! Spiegel nearly died. The bottom line is that the mobile app — Snapchat — eventually became such a hit that the founders even rejected a buy-out offer from social media giant Facebook!
