PricePanda is a price comparison website, accessible from both Singapore and Malaysia. After two months of open beta, the service is now fully available. In its first weeks of operation in Malaysia and Singapore, PricePanda is already cooperating with a significant amount of top local online electronic retailers such as Shashinki, Challenger, Fotokem, Mobile Megamall, Youbeli, Mobile88, Lazada and Cresdo.
At the same time, the number of products on the site just in Malaysia has grown into over 2,000 individual items. Currently, the product catalogue is focused on consumer electronics, such as mobile phones, cameras, computers, and also includes software.
Company actively expanding
Although Rocket Internet has a bad reputation of rapid hiring and firing, PricePanda currently has 20 employees, with representatives in both Malaysia and Singapore. PricePanda also has plans to rollout its service to more countries soon. While Rocket Internet did not reveal their expansion plans, some of the countries in Southeast Asia with a strong Rocket Internet presence include Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia.
Save22 to face tough competition
Locally, one of the main players operating in the price comparison space is Save22, previously known as LobangClub. With Rocket Internet backing PricePanda, Save22 will face a tough competition in the same space. However, Save22 compares prices across different physical outlets and leverages on its community for the latest price comparison, while PricePanda compares online prices only from different e-commerce platforms.
Although Save22 has a completely different strategy as compared to PricePanda, will it stand a chance against the wrath of Rocket Internet? Will PricePanda face the same fate as Home24 three months later? Let’s wait and see.
